50 Cent Gets Candid About Growing Up With a Lesbian Mother: “I’m Not Ashamed of That In Any Way”

Written by on 20 October 2026

Fifty Cent is opening up like never before about the woman who shaped him.

In a new interview with Variety published Oct. 17, the Queens rap legend got real about growing up with his late mother, Sabrina Jackson, who was a lesbian — and why learning that about her as a kid never fazed him.

“When your mom has friends around, you look at them and just see friends,” 50 told Variety. “And how often does a woman have a female friend that she’s close to that she talks with often? As a child, I just saw two women hanging out. My grandmother informed me later that there was more going on and they weren’t just friends, and I was like, ‘Oh! Now I know what that was!'”

“I’m not ashamed of that in any way,” he added. “I grew up around that.”

The conversation came up while 50 was promoting his new film Street Fighter, where he stars as the iconic boxer Balrog — but it also pulled back the curtain on one of the most vulnerable bars of his career. Back in 2005, he addressed his mother’s sexuality on The Game’s smash hit “Hate It or Love It”: “Coming up I was confused, my mommy kissing a girl / Confusion occurs comin’ up in the cold world.”

That honesty runs deep in his story. Sabrina Jackson was just 15 years old when she had him, and she was tragically murdered when he was only 8. Raised by his grandmother after her death, 50 has said he struggled to even understand she was gone — but he never treated her truth as a secret.

The interview also drew a parallel to another rap giant: Jay-Z, whose mother Gloria Carter shared her own story through “Smile” on his 2017 album 4:44. Asked if the two have ever talked about having lesbian mothers, 50 said they haven’t — but noted the common ground.

“No, but it is something we have in common,” he said. “We just reacted differently to it. One of us doesn’t mind, and the other one kind of minds a little bit.”

Fifty has never shied away from being vulnerable in his music, and this latest interview is another reminder that the toughest MCs often carry the deepest stories.
