The Hip Hop Nutcracker With Da Brat Comes to The National Theatre in Washington, DC
The holidays get a hip-hop remix in Washington this year. The Hip Hop Nutcracker plays The National Theatre in Washington, DC, from Tuesday, November 17 through Sunday, November 22, 2026, with the Friday, November 20 performance at 7:30 PM a perfect night out for the whole family.
Created in 2013 by director and choreographer Jennifer Weber and writer Mike Fitelson, the show retells the classic Nutcracker story through hip-hop dance, moving the tale from 19th-century Germany to the vibrant streets of contemporary New York City. A cast of a dozen all-star dancers, an on-stage DJ, and an electric violinist bring Tchaikovsky’s beloved score to life with power moves and fresh energy.
For the Washington and Chicago stops, special guest MC Da Brat joins the production, while hip-hop pioneer Kurtis Blow appears at the other tour engagements. It is a holiday show that speaks to every generation, blending a story everyone knows with the culture and sound of today.
