Six people were shot late Halloween night in downtown Newark, near the University of Delaware campus, Newark police say.
The shooting happened around 11:13 p.m. on Saturday, October 31, on the south sidewalk of East Main Street, directly across from Choate Street, while Halloween crowds filled the downtown strip. All six victims were taken to local hospitals for medical treatment. Police have not released the victims’ conditions.
Officers from the Newark Police Department, the University of Delaware Police Department, and Delaware State Police responded to the scene. Main Street was closed for about five hours while detectives investigated. The University of Delaware sent an emergency alert to the campus community at 11:29 p.m. warning people to avoid the area.
Police say there does not appear to be an ongoing threat to public safety connected to the incident, and the investigation remains active as detectives work to determine what happened.
