Nicki Minaj’s Lawyers Are Walking Away on Both Coasts — and One Firm Wants Nearly $300K

Nicki Minaj is fighting legal battles on two coasts at once — and right now, the lawyers are the ones doing the fighting against her. In Los Angeles, a former firm wants a judge to hand it nearly $300,000 in unpaid fees. In New York, her current lawyers are asking a judge to let them walk away, saying the relationship has broken down beyond repair.

According to HotNewHipHop, attorneys at Gordon Rees Scully Mansukhani filed a renewed request for a default judgment against Minaj in Los Angeles County Superior Court on Tuesday, November 3. The firm says it has received no response to a lawsuit it filed in March over outstanding legal fees, and it is now asking the court to award about $295,605, including the costs of chasing payment.

The dispute goes back to the firm’s work defending Minaj against a copyright infringement lawsuit over her 2014 song “I Lied.” Composer Julius Johnson accused her of copying elements of his song “onmysleeve,” but that case ended in a confidential settlement in late 2024. Gordon Rees alleges Minaj then failed to pay its invoices, which initially totaled approximately $229,542, with contractual late fees pushing the alleged debt higher. The firm is seeking a default judgment because it says Minaj has not answered its complaint — though the judge has not granted that request. A hearing is scheduled for November 16.

Meanwhile, on the opposite coast, Kurzman Eisenberg Corbin & Lever is having its own difficulties representing Minaj and her company, Pink Friday Productions LLC. Attorney Bruce W. Bieber cited “irreconcilable differences” in an October 23 filing, saying the parties could no longer agree on litigation strategy, and described “a breakdown in communication” that made continued representation unworkable.

The firm had been defending Minaj in a $275,000 lawsuit brought by 24/7 Productions over expenses tied to her 2023 Jingle Ball appearances and promotional events for Pink Friday 2. The company alleges it was never reimbursed for approximately $275,149 in production and hospitality expenses. Minaj’s attorneys have disputed those claims, maintaining that her company paid what it owed and that she should not be held personally responsible for the company’s obligations.

Even notifying Minaj of the withdrawal request proved difficult, according to court filings. TMZ reported that a process server was told someone would come downstairs to receive the papers at her New York residence, but nobody appeared, and a November 2 attempt was unsuccessful when the server was told Minaj was unavailable. New York Judge Leslie A. Stroth has temporarily paused the proceedings and scheduled a December 1 hearing to address the firm’s request to withdraw. Neither firm has received the court ruling it is seeking.

For all the courtroom drama, Nicki’s music still speaks loudest — press play on “Super Bass” below and remind yourself why the Barbz stay locked in no matter what the headlines say.
