Dr. Dre Doubles Down on AI in Music: “The Only People Who Are Going to Be Mad About AI Are People Who Aren’t That Creative”

Dr. Dre is not backing down from artificial intelligence — and he has a blunt message for the critics. The legendary producer says he is “extremely excited” about AI, and he believes the people pushing back against it are telling on themselves.
Dre made the comments during an appearance on Listen & Laugh, the new podcast from Ice Cube and Mike Epps. A clip shared by NFR Podcast on X on Friday, November 6, captured the Aftermath founder laying out exactly where he stands. “I am extremely excited about AI, I love it,” Dre said. “I love the potential of it, I love the idea of where it could possibly go with music and film.”
Then he went further. “It’s just a whole new level of creativity,” he continued. “I think the only people who are going to be mad about AI are people who aren’t that creative.”
The remarks land just months after Dre defended his use of the technology in an August interview with The New York Times, alongside longtime business partner Jimmy Iovine. There, Dre compared the backlash against AI to the resistance that greeted drum machines and synthesizers when they first entered music production — tools that were once called cheating and are now simply part of the craft. He also confirmed he was already using AI in his own production process, experimenting with material he created himself.
Iovine backed him up, arguing that talented musicians could make better records by incorporating the technology, and suggesting that more producers were experimenting with AI privately than were willing to admit it publicly. Their comments drew swift criticism from hip-hop fans worried about what AI means for artists, ownership, and the value of human creativity — concerns Dre’s latest comments do not really answer. There is a real difference, after all, between a producer using AI to experiment with his own recordings and companies generating music from material artists never authorized.
Still, Dre sounds more comfortable than ever saying the quiet part out loud. The debate around AI in music is not going anywhere — and neither is Dre’s position in it. Meek Mill recently praised AI as a learning tool and caught backlash of his own, while A$AP Rocky has argued AI should be a tool, not the artist. Dre, for his part, seems to think the tool is the future, and the future is already here.
