Dover Movies 14 Opens at Dover Mall, Bringing the Big Screen Back to the Capital City
After more than two years without a movie theater, Dover has its big screen back. Dover Movies 14 officially opened its doors Friday at Dover Mall, giving residents a place to catch a film close to home again — and giving the shopping center a new reason to draw visitors.
For some moviegoers, the return has been a long time coming. Dover resident Fred Evins said he was so excited about the theater coming back that he stopped by the mall regularly during construction to check on the progress and talk with the construction crews.
The new theater comes with heated reclining seats, LED screens, and a self-serve popcorn machine, and it kept an entrance into the mall so moviegoers can flow between the theater and the shopping center.

Sven Johnson, the theater’s head of operations, said the reopening means Dover residents no longer have to drive 20 or 30 minutes to neighboring communities to see a movie — and he expects the theater to bring more foot traffic and business to the mall. Former Dover Mall employee Darryl Curry shared that hope, saying the theater brings money back to Dover and the Dover Mall instead of sending moviegoers to Milford or Middletown.
Evins hopes the community turns out in force to keep it there. As he put it, this is the capital city of Delaware, and it needs a movie theater.
The reopening comes as Dover Mall looks to regain momentum and attract new businesses and visitors.
