New Details Emerge in Newark Halloween Night Shooting That Left Six Hurt Near University of Delaware

Newark police are still investigating the Halloween night gunfire that left six people shot on East Main Street, and new reporting Sunday has filled in more of what happened in the minutes after shots rang out.
Police say gunfire broke out around 11:13 p.m. Saturday on the south sidewalk of East Main Street, directly across from Choate Street, in an area crowded with Halloween revelers near the University of Delaware. Officers were already nearby when the shooting happened, according to reports. Six people were struck and taken to two hospitals. Initial reports indicated four trauma patients, ages 15 to 19, were taken to Christiana Hospital with multiple gunshot wounds, and another person was believed to have suffered a graze wound. Police have not released the victims’ identities or conditions, and there have been no confirmed reports of fatalities.
Main Street was closed for about five hours, between South Chapel Street and Haines Street, while investigators worked the scene. Students described crowds running from the area, and some said a University of Delaware phone alert described only “police activity” rather than a shooting, leaving students to learn the full extent of what happened hours later.
No suspect information has been released, and no arrests have been announced. Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact Detective Paige Klein at 302-366-7100, extension 3480, or by email at pklein@newark.de.us. People with photos or video from the scene can also submit them through the Newark Police evidence portal at https://newarkpolicede.evidence.com/axon/community-request/public/34874.
