No Criminal Activity Found in Milford School Fire as Classes Canceled at Lulu Ross Elementary

Written by on 26 October 2026

A fire that heavily damaged Lulu Ross Elementary School in Milford early Sunday morning was not the result of criminal activity, according to investigators, but the damage is serious enough to keep students out of class this week.

Firefighters were called to the school shortly after 4 a.m. on Sunday, October 25, after an automatic fire alarm sounded. Crews with the Carlisle Fire Company found fire coming from the roof, and after an interior attack was cut short by deteriorating conditions, the blaze grew to three alarms, bringing in additional help. It took firefighters about three hours to get the upper hand.

Deputy State Fire Marshals with the Office of the Delaware State Fire Marshal investigated the origin and cause. They determined the fire started in the school’s Kent wing. The exact cause remains under investigation, but investigators said they found no evidence of criminal activity at this time. No injuries were reported, and no damage estimate was available.

The disruption extends beyond one school. Students at Ross Elementary will have no class this week while school leaders work on a long-term plan. Classes at neighboring Mispillion Elementary were also canceled Monday after the fire damaged internet and phone lines serving that school.
