Lawmakers address reported presence of ICE agent on school property
Delaware lawmakers are responding after a federal immigration agent entered the campus at Stanton Middle School on a Tuesday morning in October, in an incident described as apparently the first time an agent with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement had entered a Delaware school campus. School security and administrators approached the agent, who then left the campus, and an arrest followed just off school grounds.
The Red Clay Consolidated School District said no students were taken into custody and none were removed from the school. A spokesperson said the district remains committed to providing a safe, supportive and compassionate learning environment, while acknowledging the concern and uncertainty such a situation can create for families.
House Speaker Melissa Minor-Brown, House Majority Leader Kerri Evelyn Harris and House Majority Whip Ed Osienski said in a joint statement that no child should have to worry about federal immigration enforcement activity at school, and no parent should fear what might happen at drop-off or pick-up. They said schools are places for learning, and that cannot happen when students, educators and families feel unsafe.
Governor Matt Meyer said schools are not hunting grounds, and parents must be able to drop children off without worrying about federal agents watching or waiting. Federal officials later said ICE does not target children or schools.
