Drake Says He Made “Janice STFU” Just Three Days Before “ICEMAN” Dropped — Then Shot the Video the Same Day

Drake Janice STFU

Drake just revealed that the biggest song of his ICEMAN era almost did not make the album at all. The Toronto superstar says he recorded “Janice STFU” a mere three days before the project dropped — and then turned around and shot the music video the very same day.

Drake shared the story while appearing on a gambling livestream hosted by Trainwreckstv, where he sang along to some of his own songs and hinted the session could be preparation for his upcoming tour. When “Janice STFU” came on, he let the timeline slip. “You know, I did this song three days before the album came out,” he said, as captured by Akademiks TV on Instagram. “I shot the video the same day.”

That last-minute scramble produced the defining hit of the album. “Janice STFU” became Drake’s biggest ICEMAN song and his 14th number one on the Billboard Hot 100 — breaking Michael Jackson’s record for the most chart-toppers by a solo male artist. It is also one of the catchiest and most pop-friendly cuts on the whole LP, which makes the three-day turnaround even more remarkable. Sometimes the track that comes together at the deadline is the one that connects hardest.

The song has also had its share of drama off the charts. Songwriter Aviel Calev Hirschfield claimed Drake stole the lyrics and chorus melody from a demo he had sent to Drake’s team — a claim the OVO camp immediately and emphatically denied. Hirschfield filed a copyright lawsuit, then withdrew it less than two weeks later, though the door remains open for him to refile. Drake has maintained he wrote the song himself.

Elsewhere on the same stream, Drake heard his classic “Take Care” come on and told viewers he will probably never perform it again — a comment that disappointed fans and raised eyebrows, given that the song is a collaboration with Rihanna. Whether his ongoing tensions explain that call is something Drake did not spell out, but the timing speaks for itself.

For a song made in three days, “Janice STFU” has had quite a run. Press play on the official video below:
