Lil Jon Reveals the Childhood Accident Behind His Signature Sunglasses

Written by on 17 October 2026

For decades, Lil Jon’s jet-black shades have been as much a part of his persona as his booming voice. Now, the crunk legend is finally pulling back the curtain on why he never takes them off — and the real story is far more personal than anyone imagined.

The Atlanta hitmaker opens up in his upcoming memoir, I Only Shout So You Can Hear Me (out October 20), revealing that a frightening childhood accident permanently changed his eye — and how he felt about his appearance. Speaking to PEOPLE in an interview published Friday, Jon shared that when he was around six years old, he took one of his diabetic mother Carrie’s insulin syringes, curious about how the air would feel on his eye. The experiment went wrong: he accidentally stabbed himself in the eye with the needle.

Doctors diagnosed him with a traumatic cataract from the needle, kicking off a long road of medical treatment. Jon underwent multiple surgeries, including a corneal transplant, and had to wear a metal eye patch to school. At that age, standing out meant being teased, and the future hitmaker became shy — but he refused to let it break him.

“I definitely was teased in school,” he told PEOPLE. “At that age if somebody’s different, they’re going to pick on you. I became shy. But somehow I turned it into, ‘I want to always prove people wrong.'”

Jon had learned to play the drums shortly before the accident, and he channeled everything into music. As an adult, he developed a lazy eye linked to the childhood injury. Even after another surgery to address the condition, he keeps the shades on — the look that became his trademark.

“Whenever people have put me down, I used that as fuel in my fire to excel,” he said. “I got to figure out how to pave my way no matter what. I got to prove people wrong. I’m the type, if an obstacle is put in front of me, I’m going to figure out how to go through it, over it, under it, around it.”

That same determination carried him from Atlanta clubs to the top of the Billboard charts, where classics like “Get Low” and “Turn Down for What” made him a global force. Check out the official video for “Turn Down for What” with DJ Snake here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HMUDVMiITOU

I Only Shout So You Can Hear Me arrives October 20 — and if this story is any indication, the memoir is going to be a must-read.
