HISTORY
J’ouvert began in Trinidad as an act of emancipation celebration, with revelers covering themselves in mud, paint, and oil before sunrise — a tradition that turned into the most beloved street party in Caribbean culture. Its music is soca, and no one embodies the sound more than Machel Montano, whose songs “The Fog” and “The Road” (with Ashanti) were built around the Carnival and J’ouvert experience — paint powder, mud-covered revelers, and the mystical dust that covers parading souls. Wilmington’s Caribbean community has kept the tradition alive with fetes like this one, bringing the islands’ most electric night to Delaware.
