A Middletown High School student was arrested Tuesday morning after school staff stopped the student while entering the building and found a loaded gun and a knife, according to Delaware State Police and the Appoquinimink School District.
The district said a parent had reported that a student may have a weapon. School teams located the student on the way to class, and the school resource officer secured the loaded firearm. The student was taken into custody and removed from the building.
No one was injured, and police and the district said there is no current or additional threat at the school. The district thanked the parent who raised the concern and commended school teams for acting quickly. In a message signed by Principal Nell Jean and Superintendent Matt Burrows, the district said it is working with Delaware State Police.
Police have released no further information, including the student’s identity or any charges, and the incident is described as developing.
