Nelly Says Taylor Swift Paid Him $50K in a McDonald’s Bag — and He Asked for It That Way

Some payment stories sound too good to be true. This one, Nelly swears, is exactly how it happened — fifty thousand dollars, handed over in a McDonald’s bag, courtesy of Taylor Swift.
The St. Louis legend recently told the story during an appearance on The Breakfast Club alongside his wife, Ashanti, recalling how an unexpected phone call from the pop superstar turned into one of the most memorable paydays of his career. Swift, he said, called him while he was home in St. Louis and asked whether he would travel to Houston to perform. She and her friends had put together a dance routine to his 2002 smash “Hot in Herre,” and she wanted the man himself there for it.
Swift was upfront about her budget, telling him she did not have a budget like that — but her offer was still nothing to sneeze at: $50,000, a private jet to bring him and his children to Houston, and hotel accommodations. Nelly’s response has become the stuff of legend. “Can you put that in a McDonald’s bag?” he recalled asking. Sure enough, someone from Swift’s team handed him the cash in exactly that packaging.
The performance itself was brief — about three minutes on stage — but the story has lasted far longer than the set. And despite the generous payment, Nelly insisted money was not the motivation. “I would’ve did it for free,” he said. Swift had also reserved a presidential suite for him and his family, but they never even checked into the hotel. After his short appearance, they headed straight back to the airport, where her plane was waiting to take them home.
The friendship, it turns out, has lasted well beyond those concert appearances. Nelly and Ashanti have remained close with Swift over the years, and Nelly has called himself a Swiftie, while Ashanti affectionately refers to her as “Tay Tay.” Their friendship has even extended to the stage, where Swift has joined Nelly to sing “Dilemma,” his classic collaboration with Kelly Rowland.
It is one of those stories that only gets better every time it is told: a hip-hop legend, a pop superstar, a three-minute performance, and a fast-food bag full of cash. Only in this industry.
