Freestyle: A Love Story Brings Latin Hip Hop to NJPAC Dec 5
The music that ruled the clubs and the radio in the late eighties comes to the stage in Newark. Freestyle: A Love Story takes over the Victoria Theater at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center, 1 Center Street in Newark, on Saturday, December 5, 2026, at 8:00 PM, with a 3:00 PM matinee the same day and a 3:00 PM performance on Sunday, December 6.
The show is an immersive, music-and-dance-filled theatrical play celebrating Latin Hip Hop, also known as freestyle. Starring Luna Lauren Vélez, it follows Ana and Junior, who meet at a freestyle show in 1987 and fall in love, reuniting decades later at Radio City Music Hall’s Freestyle Extravaganza. Freestyle legends Judy Torres and K7 are part of the production, bringing the era’s sound to life on stage. A VIP add-on includes a post-show old school jam with DJ Capital B, an open bar, and dancing at Nico Kitchen + Bar, NJPAC’s on-site restaurant.
Freestyle is New Jersey and New York history, and this is the Garden State debut of a show built around the soundtrack of a generation. If you grew up on the music, or you just want to understand where it all came from, this is a night at the theater worth dressing up for.
