St. Georges Bridge Closing to Southbound Traffic Monday for Weeks of Maintenance

Heads up, New Castle County drivers — the St. Georges Bridge is about to get a lot harder to cross.
Starting Monday, November 9, the bridge closes to southbound traffic for maintenance, and that shutdown is expected to last about three weeks. The Army Corps says the work will close one direction at a time: once the southbound closure wraps up, a full northbound closure follows in late November or early December, with maintenance continuing into early 2027.
Emergency vehicles and school buses will still be able to get through — the Army Corps says its contractor will accommodate them during the closures. For everyone else, it’s alternate routes and extra time for the foreseeable future.
No exact end date was given for the southbound closure, and no specific detour routes were named. All dates are approximate and could shift depending on weather and other factors, so drivers should expect delays throughout the maintenance period and plan accordingly.
