Two people are facing charges in the deadly shooting that followed Delaware State University’s homecoming weekend.
Police say 22-year-old Nasir Cox was killed on Oct. 10 when gunfire erupted in the Dover Commons shopping center parking lot, where thousands had gathered after DSU required homecoming visitors to leave campus by 6 p.m. Cox, a Philadelphia man who had traveled to Dover to visit a friend and join the festivities, was struck in the crossfire. A 21-year-old man was also shot and hospitalized in stable condition.
The first suspect, a 22-year-old Dover man identified by Dover police as one of the suspected shooters, was taken into custody Oct. 16 at a home in the 500 block of Crawford Avenue. Dover police, Delaware State Police and the U.S. Marshals Service First State Fugitive Task Force recovered a 9mm handgun, ammunition, and clothing and accessories matching what was worn during the shooting.
A second suspect, a 17-year-old boy, was arrested Oct. 21 at a home in Snow Hill and is being held in Maryland pending extradition to Delaware.
Both are charged with first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, three counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, four counts of first-degree reckless endangering, and carrying a concealed deadly weapon. Their names are being withheld under a new Delaware law, House Bill 59, which limits the release of names and photos of people charged with crimes unless disclosure is needed to protect public safety.
