October Nor’easter Brings Coastal Flooding, Strong Winds to Delaware Coast

Written by on 20 October 2026

A slow-moving October nor’easter parked off the Mid-Atlantic coast is hammering the Delaware coast with strong winds, large waves and repeated rounds of coastal flooding that will stretch through at least Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service.

A Coastal Flood Advisory remains in effect for portions of Delaware, including Kent, Inland Sussex and the Delaware Beaches. Minor tidal flooding was expected during Tuesday evening’s high tide, with the Wednesday evening high tide the greatest concern — widespread minor to low-end moderate flooding is possible, especially in back bays and low-lying coastal communities. Additional flooding could linger beyond Wednesday as elevated tides persist.

Northeasterly winds are expected to strengthen through Wednesday, gusting 35 to 40 mph along the Delaware coast before easing Wednesday night into Thursday. A Gale Warning covers Delaware’s ocean waters through late Wednesday, with gusts of 35 to 45 knots and seas of 8 to 12 feet. A Small Craft Advisory is in effect for Delaware Bay through midday Wednesday, with hazardous boating conditions.

Regionally, the storm is driving sustained winds of 25 to 35 mph from North Carolina to Nantucket, with gusts up to 50 mph, breaking waves of 6 to 12 feet along the Delmarva Peninsula, and ocean levels 1 to 3 feet above normal at high tide. Forecasters warn of life-threatening rip currents up and down the coastline.

Drivers should avoid roads near tidal waterways, where floodwater can cause partial or complete closures, and beachgoers should stay out of the water during high surf.
