Delaware State Police have released new details about the arrest of a 15-year-old Middletown High School student found carrying a loaded handgun and a knife on campus Tuesday.
According to police, a concerned parent reported that the student had displayed a knife the previous day and made threatening statements. On the morning of October 27, the school resource officer learned of the report and, with school staff, began an investigation at the school on Silver Lake Road. Staff determined the student had not yet arrived.
When the student arrived at about 10:40 a.m., the officer and school staff approached him and escorted him into an empty classroom. Police say he refused to surrender his bookbag and crossbody bag and resisted, leading to a struggle. Officers and staff secured both bags and found a loaded 9mm handgun and a 4-inch knife inside the crossbody bag.
The teen was charged with possession of a firearm by a person under 21, possession of ammunition by a person under 21, possession of a firearm in a safe school zone, possession of a deadly weapon other than a firearm by a person under 18, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, possession of a weapon in a safe recreation zone, and resisting arrest. He was arraigned in New Castle County Family Court and committed to a juvenile detention center on a $70,100 cash bond.
The student has not been publicly named because of his age.
