History

Motown Records, founded by Berry Gordy in Detroit in 1959, became one of the most successful and influential record labels in history, giving the world The Temptations, The Supremes, The Four Tops, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson, and the Jackson 5. Its signature sound — soulful vocals, driving beats, and unforgettable melodies — crossed over to audiences of every background and earned Detroit the nickname Hitsville U.S.A. The Temptations’ “Silent Night,” from their 1970 Christmas Card album, remains one of the most beloved holiday soul recordings ever made, and it is exactly the kind of classic this show celebrates.
