Delaware to require updated firefighter background checks in 2027
Delaware fire companies are preparing for a change in how members are screened, with new state and federal background check requirements set to take effect in March 2027. The Delaware State Fire Commission shared the update in its Fall 2026 update, following Governor Matt Meyer signing Senate Bill 325 in September.
Supporters say the change closes a gap in the current process. Delaware has long required state-level checks, but those checks do not capture criminal histories from other states. Under the updated approach, many volunteer fire company members will need both state and federal criminal history checks, giving fire companies a fuller picture before someone serves.
The Delaware Volunteer Firefighters Association has said the fire service worked with legislative sponsors for several years to get the policy right. Its executive manager, Jay Jones, described Senate Bill 325 as striking the balance the service needed. The State Fire Prevention Commission will handle review, notification and compliance work tied to the new checks.
For Delaware families, the change is aimed at strengthening trust in the people who respond in emergencies, while keeping the process workable for volunteer companies across the state. More details on how members complete the new checks are expected as the March 2027 start date approaches.
