Subtropical Storm Josephine Churns Off the Coast, Could Bring Coastal Flooding

Written by on 23 October 2026

Subtropical Storm Josephine has formed off the Mid-Atlantic coast, and while most of its punch is expected to stay over open water, coastal Delaware could still see effects through Friday.

Josephine was about 245 miles south of Nantucket on Wednesday evening with sustained winds near 65 mph, according to the National Hurricane Center. It is the 10th named storm of a 2026 Atlantic hurricane season that has run well behind schedule, thanks to a strong El Niño suppressing activity.

The storm is expected to stay well off the East Coast, tracking northeast before dissipating this weekend. Still, forecasters say coastal flooding is possible around high tide from the Mid-Atlantic to Cape Cod through Friday, and breezy-to-windy conditions will continue along the coast through Thursday. Most rain should stay offshore, so much of the East Coast stays dry into the weekend. A Coastal Flood Advisory is in effect for Delaware’s coast — avoid flooded roadways and never drive through water of unknown depth.
