History: AZ
Anthony Cruz — known to the world as AZ — announced himself to hip-hop in 1994 with a show-stealing verse on “Life’s a Bitch” from Nas’s landmark debut Illmatic. A year later he dropped his own debut classic, Doe or Die (1995), cementing his place as one of the most technically gifted lyricists of his era. Across three decades, AZ has stayed true to sharp, streetwise lyricism and earned a reputation as a rapper’s rapper.
The legacy keeps growing: in May 2026, AZ completed his trilogy with Doe Or Die III on Mass Appeal, reuniting with Nas on the track “Surprise” — a full-circle moment more than 30 years after Illmatic. And this very month, he linked up with Mathematics and Method Man on the brand-new single “God Body.” When AZ touches a mic, hip-hop history shows up.
