History: Sound System Culture
Sound system culture was born in Kingston, Jamaica, in the 1940s and 1950s, when rival crews built towering stacks of speakers and battled for crowd supremacy with exclusive dubplates — custom recordings cut for one sound alone. It is the foundation of reggae and dancehall, and it shaped hip-hop itself: Kingston-born DJ Kool Herc carried the sound-system idea to the Bronx, where it became the blueprint for the block party.
Stone Love, founded in 1972 by Winston “Wee Pow” Powell, is one of Jamaica’s most iconic sounds, famed for its dubplate arsenal and its role in launching the careers of countless dancehall stars. Bass Odyssey, led by captain Damion Delingy, is renowned in clash circles for its deep catalogue of Bounty Killer dubplates and its heavyweight juggling sets. When two sounds of this calibre share a bill, it is a night for the history books — and the sneakers ball turns it into a full celebration of style as well as sound.
