History: Jersey Club and New Jersey Hip-Hop
New Jersey has shaped American music far beyond its size. Jersey club was born in Newark in the early 2000s, pioneered by DJ Tameil and the Brick Bandits crew, who took Baltimore club’s breakneck energy and gave it a harder, bouncier Newark bounce at around 130 beats per minute. The sound grew from local parties into a global movement, carried by a new generation of Newark producers and DJs including UNIIQU3, Nadus and Sliink.
The state’s hip-hop legacy runs just as deep. Newark gave the world Queen Latifah and Redman, East Orange gave us Naughty by Nature, and South Orange raised Lauryn Hill. From the club sounds of Brick City to the anthems that defined East Coast rap, Jersey’s fingerprint is all over the music Kiss 101.7 plays every day. Friday night at Loma Lounge is a chance to celebrate all of it in one room.
