Ease on down the road — THE WIZ is coming to Wilmington! The Tony-winning revival hits The Playhouse on Rodney Square for three nights only, October 23 through 25.
THE HISTORY
The Wiz premiered on Broadway in January 1975 and took the theater world by storm, winning seven Tony Awards including Best Musical. With music and lyrics by Charlie Smalls, it retold L. Frank Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz through the lens of Black culture — soul, gospel, funk, and R&B replacing the traditional show-tune sound, performed by an all-Black cast. Songs like “Ease on Down the Road,” “Home,” and “A Brand New Day” became standards.
The 1978 film version starred Diana Ross as Dorothy and a young Michael Jackson as the Scarecrow. In 2015, NBC’s The Wiz Live! brought it to a new generation with Queen Latifah, Mary J. Blige, and Common. The current Broadway revival — which opened in spring 2024 with a refreshed book — has been selling out across its national tour, and now it’s our turn.
Whether it’s family night or date night, this is one of those shows you talk about for years. Experience the magic of Oz live on stage right here in Delaware.
Tickets are on sale now — call 302-888-0200 or visit Broadway in Wilmington to grab yours before they’re gone.
